The RMS TITANIC
was a passenger Liner of  The White Star Line  
which struck an iceberg  on  her maiden voyage
from Southampton to NY  on the 15th April 1912.
1,517 lives were lost making it the most famous
& deadliest maritime disaster in history.
Titanic's wreck was discovered in Sept 1985
lying at a depth of  2.5 miles. It had split in two.
Each half was 600m appart.

The RMS LUSITANIA
was a passenger Liner of  The Cunard Line  
which was torpedoed by The German U Boat 
U 20, eleven miles off the Old Head of Kinsale on
the 7th May 1915 (During WWI)
In total 1,198 Lives were lost.
This attrocity greatly increased anti-german sentiment
(Germany  issued a silver medal celebrating the sinking)
Lusitania's sinking  was partially
responsible for the USA entering WWI.

Eamon DeValera
1882 - 1975
Eamon DeValera was born in New York, in Oct 1882,
a US Citizen, DeValera was a revolutionary & statesman,
And a Highly controversial Figure in 20thC Irish History.
Imprisoned for his part in the easter rising, he was released
In June 1917 & was elected MP having won the
East Clare Westminster seat in July of that year.
Elected President of Sinn Fein in 1917 a post he held for
Nine Years until founding Fianna Fail. DeValera served
lengthy Periods as Taoiseach, & later as President.
DeValera is also remembered for the 1937 Constitution.&
A policy (at least publicly) of Neutrality during WWII.

SEAN TREACY
(1895 - 1920)
Treacy was a leading member of the 3rd
Tipperary Brigade IRA which took part in many
high profile attacks during the Irish War of Independence.
Most notably Soloheadbeg attack on the RIC., &
The Rescue of Sean Hogan at Knocklong station.
Treacy was killed in October 1920 in a Shootout
in Talbot Street, Dublin with British Soldiers.
which also resulted in the deaths of a Major Smyth & Capt White

KEVIN BARRY
(1902 – 1920)
Kevin Barry was the first Irish Republican
to be executed since the 1916 leaders.
Barry was sentenced to death for his
part in the deaths of three soldiers including
Private Marshall Whitehead.
Kevin Barry's Death (by hanging) at 18 years of age
  is considered a watershed moment in the War of
Independence.

CHRISTY RING
(1920 - 1979)
Nicholas Christopher Ring, born in Kilboy, Near Cloyne
East Cork in Oct 1920, is generally regarded as the
greatest hurler of all time. Ring had a prolific
career having won 13 cork, & 1 Munster title at club level.
Nine Munster senior hurling medals, Eight All-Ireland titles,
Three NHL titles.
His Tally of 33 goals & 208 points in just three games was
a record which stood until the 1970s.
Christy Ring died of a heart attack on the 2nd March 1979
aged just 58 years old.

General LIAM LYNCH
NOVEMBER 1893 - APRIL 1923
Gen Liam Lynch , IRA Chief of Staff, born in Barnagurraha,
Co Limerick in 1893. He was elected first
Lieutenant of the Irish Volunteers in 1917. He reorganised
the volunteers in 1919 becomming a commandant
of the Cork No 2 Brigade IRA. General Lynch died in a civil war
skirmish in the Knockmealdown mountains in April 1923.
Many historians believe his death marked the
effective end of the Civil War.
The Good Friday agreement was signed on his 75th Anniversary.

Michael Collins 1890 - 1922

Born 16 October 1890, died 22 August 1922. Collins was an
IRA leader, minister for finance, TD for Cork south in the
first Dail of 1919. Director of inteligence of the IRA,
He was both chairman of the provisional goverment
& commander- in- chief of the National Army.
Collins was shot dead at
Béal na mBláth, West Cork 22nd Aug 1922.

KILMICHAEL
IRA AMBUSH NOVEMBER 1920
On the 28th Nov 1920 thirty six IRA volunteers led by
Tom Barry, killed seventeen members of the RIC
auxilary division at Kilmichael Co Cork.
Many of these Auxilaries were WWI veterans.
This attack came a week after Bloody Sunday
in Croke Park
Kilmichael was one of the bloodiest attacks of the war of
independence.

IRA AMBUSH JANUARY 1919

In 1919 two Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC)
constables, James McDonnell & Patrick O'Connell
were ambushed by the 3rd tipperary IRA brigade
including Dan Breen, near Tipperary town 
both policemen were shot dead. This attack is
generally seen as the start of the War of independence

DINNY LACEY
1890 - 1923
During the War of Independence, Dinny Lacey
commanded a Flying Column of the 3rd Tipperary
IRA brigade. In 1920 Two attacks resulted in the
Deaths of Six British Soldiers at Golden Co Tipperary,
& Four R.I.C. men at Lisnagaul, in the
Glen of Aherlow. During the civil war Lacey
Commanded anti Treaty forces against
Free State troops & was Killed in action at Ballydavid,
near Bansha - February 18th 1923.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
(1917 - 1963)
John F Kennedy  was the 35th President of the USA. He served from
1961 until his assasination in November 1963.
Kennedy saw military service in the pacific
during WWII.  He later represented Massachusetts in The
House of Representitives (1947- 1953), & then
The Senate from 1953 - 1960 before defeating
Richard Nixon in The 1960 Presidential Election.
The Kennedy era saw many domestic & international problems,
such as the black civil rights movement, cuban missile crisis etc
His assasination was one of the most shocking political events of the 20thC.

TOMAS MacCURTAIN
(1884 - 1920)
In April 1916 at the outset of the Rising, MacCurtain
commanded a force of up to 1,000 men of the Irish Volunteers
By this  time he was a brigade commander -
the highest and most important rank in the IRA
On the 20th March 1920 MacCurtain was assassinated by Disguised
Military/policemen with blackened faces, & in front of his wife & son.
Michael Collins later ordered  his personal assassination squad to kill
District Inspector Oswald Swanzy, who had ordered the attack,
He was shot with Mac Curtain's own revolver while
leaving a Protestant church in Lisburn  Co Antrim  on  the 22 August 1920
- sparking a backlash against the Catholic residents of the town




Lory Meagher
(1899 - 1973)
Lorenzo (Lory) Meagher, Born in Tullaroan Co Kilkenny,
Is generally regarded as one of  the greatest hurlers of all time.
He made his senior Club debut in 1919 & County debut in 1924.
Meagher had a Prolific Hurling  career having won  8 Leinster titles,
County titles at club level. One National Hurling League
& Three All-Ireland Final victories.
Lory Meagher farmed in Tullaroan Co. Kilkenny.
His homestead with its fine thatched house was later a heritage centre.
He Retired from the game in 1937 & died in 1973 aged Seventy Three  years. .
